The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has announced that the traditional Food Pyramid will be replaced with an icon in the shape of a plate, to help Americans understand and achieve a balanced diet.
Information about the new icon, along with with links to the new Dietary Guidelines for Americans issued by the USDA and U.S. Department of Health & Human Services (HHS) in February, can be found at www.ChooseMyPlate.gov.
The new icon, pictured at left, is in the shape of a plate, and shows the proportions of foods in each category that ideally should comprise your daily diet.
The plate icon illustrates the advice given by the new Nutritional Guidelines for Americans that were announced in February: Make half your daily diet fruits and vegetables.
