Did you know that March is National Nutrition Month? This is the month to focus on learning and implementing good nutrition and healthy eating habits for life, as a most important step toward prevention of disease and living a longer and healthier life.
As part of National Nutrition Month, the National Institutes of Health (NIH), under the Department of Health and Human Services, is sponsoring a month-long Calendar of Special Events, including a series of workshops, symposia, lectures, classes and other special events, focusing on good nutrition for wellness.
NIH has also published a pamphlet entitled, “March is National Nutrition Month; Food for Thought: Good Nutrition Begins at Home,” which gives five reasons to prepare meals at home, and provides some time-saving tips for convenient preparation of healthy meals at home.
The new Dietary Guidelines for Americans 2010 were released in February by the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services (HHS) and the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA). These are the official dietary guidelines for Americans, issued by HHS and USDA every five years, as mandated by Congress. Read our February feature article about the New Dietary Guidelines for Americans Issued by USDA and HHS, highlighting some of the recommendations and changes made by the new Guidelines. More information is available from Health.gov.
At MyPyramid.gov, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) provides a wealth of information on good nutrition, including a series of interactive tools to help you establish a personalized eating plan meeting your own needs, and to plan and assess your food and physical activity choices based on the Dietary Guidelines for Americans.
You can also find information on Nutrition for Life: Healthy Aging, including nutrition tips for older adults as well as other information about healthy eating, from the American Dietetic Association, a non-profit national trade association of food and dietetic professionals. National Nutrition Month was originally declared and is sponsored annually by the American Dietetic Association, as an annual nutrition education and information campaign, designed to focus attention on the importance of making informed food choices and developing sound eating and physical activity habits.
In addition, the NIH Division of Nutrition Research Coordination provides links to in-depth research studies that have been done on many aspects of good nutrition, and its effects on prevention of chronic diseases.
As part of our observance of National Nutrition Month, we at HelpingYouCare™ have resolved to make this March the month in which we further educate ourselves in depth about good nutrition and make any needed adjustments to improve our eating habits. We urge you to do the same, for yourself and for your senior loved ones. Let’s make this March the month when we start on an improved and sustainable course of healthy eating for life that can help us and our senior loved ones prevent disease and live a healthier and longer life.
