On Saturday at the National Push-Pull Bench Press and Dead Lift Championships in Phoenix, Sy Perlis easily hoisted a 187.2-pound weight over his chest, at age 91! That broke the record lift of 135 pounds that had been in place for his age category since 2005.
Sy Perlis began weightlifting when he was 60. He entered his first championship competition when he was 86. Now, at age 91, he has broken the World Association of Benchers and Deadlifters record in the 90-and-over age division.
At an age when some avoid exercise, Perlis has become an athlete, association president and event organizer Gus Rethwisch told USA Today.
“We’ve had a lot of lifters in their middle 80s, late 80s and occasionally we get one 90 and over, but they’ve never inspired people (like Perlis has),” Rethwisch said.

Dedicated to fitness, Sy says he is not done. After some time off, he plans to break his own record again.
