Informal Caregiving for Diabetes and Diabetic Complications Among Elderly Americans, Abstract of a scientific article from the Journals of Gerontology, finding that the number of required hours of caregiving per week for elderly patients with diabetes mellitus (up to 14.4 average hours per week) is more than twice as high as for elderly persons without diabetes (a average of about 6 hours per week). The article also found that the total cost of informal caregiving for elderly individuals with diabetes in the United States was between $3 and $6 billion per year.
