Opera singer and conductor Placido Domingo, now in his 70s, was recently named as the new goodwill ambassador for the U.N. Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).
UNESCO Director-General Irina Bokova said, in a ceremony at UNESCO’s Paris headquarters, that Placido Domingo is being recognized and honored for his exceptional career and for “his efforts to bring classical music to the entire world.”
Although now in his 70s, the Spanish opera singer says that he has no plans to retire.
In declining to set a retirement date, Domingo says, “I have a saying: you shouldn’t need to be [singing/ working] one day less than you can, or one day more than you should.”
