Wanted: A National Respite System - NYTimes.com

Over 28 million people in the United States provide care for someone age 75 or older.  A 2009 study by the National Alliance for Caregiving/AARP found that 88% of family caregivers never get a break from this full-time job.

The National Respite Coalition hopes to change that at the policy level.  Funding has not yet made respite services widely available to caregivers, although 24 states have received grants from the federal Administration on Aging.
